San Diego startup TurtleTech Design‘s unique MOVA Globes represent the nexus of art and science. The globes rotate silently using only the energy from light and the force of the earth’s magnetic field. The company, now in it’s sixth year producing globes, is working to develop its low-friction technology for industrial applications. Times of San Diego spoke with Shaw Lin, president of the company,
Why did you start TurtleTech Design?
Bill French invented MOVA Globes as a way of giving people the ability to take a moment from their every day lives and enjoy the magical and calm perpetual motion of our own planet, Earth. Bill and I started TurtleTech Design to share his peaceful vision with others and to bring his invention into homes and offices using advanced, eco-friendly technologies.
Can you briefly explain the technology behind the MOVA Globes?
MOVA technology combines exclusive low-friction, magnetic and solar-cell technologies into a meticulously assembled product that runs on only room light. A precision mechanism hidden inside the globe simulates perpetual motion and is carefully outfitted with our proprietary printing process to strike a refined balance between technology and design. The exceptionally clear polymer resin shell that encases the globe gives the experience of one dynamic moving creation. The autonomous nature of our technology is what makes the globe so magical.
Are there other uses for the technology?
Our ultra-low friction and self-rotational motion technologies can be applied to a number of fields. A combination of sensors with these technologies may be used in surveillance and in the exploration of oceans, waterways, tanks and pipelines. We are always actively researching these and other potential industrial applications.
What response are you getting from customers?
The response from our customers has been phenomenal. They love our MOVA Globes so much that they buy them not only for home and office, but also as gifts for loved ones, friends and business associates. Many comment on the globes’ ability to fascinate and spark conversations with those who are seeing the globes for the first time. The mesmerizing motion of the MOVA Globe is appealing to all demographics, and our sales continue to rise rapidly in the United States and internationally as well.
What’s next from the nexus of art and science?
Our MOVA Globes come in a wide range of artwork designs and sizes, but we are always experimenting with new designs, sizes and shapes. We aspire to make each MOVA collection the best of both artistry and science. We are always looking for new artists to collaborate with, from classic fine-art painters to photographers using the newest technology. We will continue to explore various low-power interactive technologies such as light, sound, touch and more so that we can add another dimension of inspiration and awe to our MOVA Globes.
