The Old Globe in Balboa Park kicks off its 2019 Summer Shakespeare Festival Sunday.

The summer season starts with the first of five preview performances of As You Like It, a romantic comedy by the Bard.

The play’s opening night will be June 22, with performances to run through July 21. It’s featured at the Lowell Davies Festival Theatre.

The season continues with the tragedy of star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet, from Aug. 11-Sept. 15. After previews, opening night is Aug. 17.

Tickets start at $30.

The summer’s non-Shakespeare highlights include the musical, The Tale of Despereaux, based on the children’s story of a mouse on a quest, which opens July 13. Previews begin July 6 and the show continues through Aug. 11 at the theater’s Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage.

Actor and comedian Steve Martin’s work returns to the Old Globe with the romantic farce The Underpants, which begins previews July 27, then opens Aug. 1. It continues through Aug. 25 at the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre.
