A planned SpaceX rocket launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base lit up the California skies Monday evening, briefly turning the evening sky into what appeared to be a scene from a work of science fiction.
Bystanders and passersby craned their necks to watch the shuttle and take video of its flight. But the flying object was not unidentified; it was a Falcon 9 rocket carrying 22 Starlink spacecraft, which lifted off at 7:28 p.m.
The Starlink spacecrafts were subsequently deployed to low Earth orbit, where they will reportedly be used to provide internet service to remote and difficult-to-access areas all over the planet.
