One of the most decorated athletes to ever come through San Diego State has been hired to get back into the game that made him famous. Marshall Faulk, who played at San Diego State for three seasons from 1991-1993, will be the new running backs coach at the University of Colorado.
Faulk was a star in college, where he finished with three first-team All-American nods, including two unanimous seasons. Faulk finished as the runner-up in Heisman voting his sophomore season.
Selected No. 2 overall in the 1994 draft, Faulk’s National Football League career is filled with accolades. The Super Bowl champion was the 2000 NFL MVP, a three-time Offensive Player of the Year, six-time All-Pro (three first-team selections) and seven-time Pro Bowl Selection.
Faulk was originally drafted by the Indianapolis Colts. He played five seasons in Indianapolis before the team traded him to the St. Louis Rams. This is where Faulk would truly leave his mark, as he won three straight Offensive Player of the Year awards.
The “Greatest Show on Turf,” the nickname for the explosive offenses featured with the Rams that made it to two Super Bowls, would have looked a lot different without Faulk leading the way on the ground.
Faulk is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame as well as the College Football Hall of Fame. The former Aztec is the third member of the Colorado football staff in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, along with head coach Deion Sanders and defensive analyst Warren Sapp.
The Buffaloes had a successful season in 2024, as they were in contention for the Big 12 title the majority of the season.
Although the school will lose top NFL draft prospects such as quarterback Shedeur Sanders and two-way star and Heisman winner Travis Hunter, Sanders will hope that a Hall of Fame player such as Faulk will bring stability to the team in its second season in the Big 12.
