San Diego State men’s basketball had two players receive preseason Mountain West awards. Senior Guard Reese Waters was named to the Preseason All-Mountain West Team, and freshman forward Pharaoh Compton earned Preseason Freshman of the Year.
Waters returns for his senior season as the team’s leading scorer (9.6 points per game) and rebounder (3.7 rebounds). His 90.3 free throw percentage also led the Aztecs. The Southern California transfer appeared in all 37 games last season and started in 23 games for SDSU. Waters is the only starter from last season that returned.
Compton graduated from Arbor View High School in Las Vegas, where he averaged 19.7 points. Compton was the highest rated recruit in Nevada, and the Aztecs’ first top 100 signee since 2005. He was also named to the Nevada Preps All-Southern Nevada boys’ basketball team.
As a team, the Aztecs were projected to finish fifth in the conference, according to the Mountain West preseason poll. Boise State, New Mexico and Nevada were projected to finish above SDSU. This is new for the Aztecs, who were projected to finish either first or second in each of the past 10 seasons.
The Aztecs play in an exhibition game on Wednesday, October 30 against Cal State San Marcos in Viejas Arena. Their regular season opener is Wednesday, November 6 at home against UC San Diego.
