Danny O’Neil connected with Jordan Napier to tie the game in the fourth quarter as San Diego State held on to beat Wyoming 27-24 on Saturday.
O’Neil threw deep to Napier for a 53-yard gain and on the following play O’Neil hit Napier again for the score. On the Aztecs’ next possession, a 41-yard pass to Nate Bennett fueled a drive that reached the Wyoming 5-yard line.
But Gabriel Plascencia’s 28-yard field goal, his second of the day, made the difference, When SDSU (3-3, 2-0 Mountain West) couldn’t make it into the end zone, the Aztecs settled for his field goal with 7:35 remaining.
“That’s just the offense all coming together.” Napier told San Diego Sports 760 of the road win.

From there, the defense turned away the Cowboys (1-5, 1-1 MW), who gained only 31 yards the rest of the way. Wyoming, with a longshot chance to get into field-goal range with seconds remaining, saw Ryan Henderson and Dominic Oliver converge on quarterback Evan Svoboda for the sack that ended the game.
SDSU, despite being banged up on defense, finished with six sacks, two by Trey White and 1.5 by Henderson. Linebacker Kyle Moretti had 7 total tackles. Head coach Sean Lewis, speaking to San Diego Sports 760, credited the squad with doing an “exceptional job and really embracing next-man-up mindset.”
O’Neil was 16 of 27 for 254 yards passing with one touchdown and one interception. Marquez Cooper rushed 25 times for 87 yards and a score. Napier had four catches for 91 yards.
The Aztecs’ other touchdown followed Eric Butler’s 43-yard interception in the first quarter to give them a 10-7 lead. Cooper’s TD enabled SDSU to take a 17-10 halftime lead.

But a field goal in the third quarter by Cowboy John Hoyland pulled Wyoming closer and a 51-yard TD run by Svoboda 10 seconds into the final quarter put them ahead 24-17.
Svoboda was 12-of-31 passing for 181 yards, including a 70-yard flea flicker TD to Jaylen Sargent, but he was intercepted twice.
This was San Diego State’s first visit to Laramie since 2016 in a series the Aztecs now lead 20-19.
The Aztecs have a bye before resuming play Oct. 26 to host Washington State for homecoming.
