The San Diego State Football team practiced for the first time this week, suiting up on the field both Thursday and Friday.
Although the team practiced in helmets only for the first two days, first-year head coach Sean Lewis thinks the following weeks will help shape the team to be ready for their season opener.
“These next two, two and a half weeks, where we get to go in our football bubble and really dive into the work and immerse ourselves from sun up to sun down, and really dial in the details of all of it,” said Lewis at a press conference. “We’re really looking forward to seeing the growth that we have as we move through this process.”
Before coming to southern California, Lewis was the head coach at Kent State from 2018-2022, before a one-year stop in Boulder as Colorado’s offensive coordinator.
Lewis will have multiple players who are on watch lists for major awards this season, highlighted by senior running back Kenan Christon, who is on the Paul Hornung Award Watch List, recognizing the high-level, versatile player in the country.
Returning for his fifth collegiate season, Christon led the Aztecs with 910 all-purpose yards, including 378 rushing yards and 201 receiving yards.
Other Aztecs on award watch lists include Marquez Cooper (Maxwell Award), Ryan Wintermeyer (Patrick Mannelly Award) Mekhi Shaw (Wuerffel Trophy Nominee), Bryce Phillips and Marlem Louis (East-West Shrine Bowl Watch List).
San Diego State opens their season at home against Texas A&M-Commerce on August 31 at Snapdragon Stadium.
