Former San Diego Padre Steve Garvey will be the grand marshal for the Riverside County Presidents’ Day Grand Parade, it was announced Friday.

Garvey, a Coachella Valley resident, rose to acclaim as a Los Angeles Dodger, the team with which he won the 1981 World Series. He moved on in 1983, joining the Padres, who he helped lead to their first World Series the following year.

The Padres retired his number in 1988.

The parade will kick off at 9 a.m. Monday at the intersection of Miles Avenue and Deglet Noor Street in Indio as part of the larger Thrillville activities taking place from Friday through Feb. 27.

“I thank Mr. Garvey for his dedication to our communities and look forward to a lot of people being there to celebrate him ….” said Riverside County Supervisor Manuel Perez. He added that Garvey was a “California champion.”

Garvey played for the Dodgers from 1969 to 1982 and Padres from 1983 to 1987. He was selected for 10 All-Star teams.

Additionally, as a Dodger, he was named the National League’s Most Valuable Player in 1974 and National League Championship Series MVP in 1978, and later as a Padre, in 1984.
