San Diego State fell just short of the 100-point mark Saturday as they continued their streak of high-scoring games, defeating Wyoming 98-71.
Matt Mitchell scored 26 in the win, while Keshad Johnson set a career high with 15 points.
Mitchell, a senior, also burrowed further into the Aztec record books, becoming only the third player in the program to score 1,000 points while also logging 500 rebounds, 200 assists and 100 steals.
Coach Brian Dutcher said he “fell in love” with Mitchell’s game dating back to recruiting him.
“This is something Matt was blessed with all the way from his high school career into his college career,” Dutcher said.
Mitchell added a further honor this week, making the Top 10 for the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award, to be presented in April.
He also continues to recover from his knee injury earlier this month, bolstered by a cumbersome brace.
Mitchell said of the brace, that he’s “trying to get used to it, but not too used to it” and that he could need it for up to six weeks after the Jan. 14 injury. He thinks though that he’s mostly made his way back.
“If I didn’t feel normal, I wouldn’t be out there,” he said.
With the win, SDSU improved to 13-4 (7-3 in Mountain West), while Wyoming fell to 10-7 (4-6 in MW).
The team shot 61% and spread the ball around. Two Aztecs, Lamont Butler and Jordan Schakel, scored in double figures and three others, Nathan Mensah, Adam Seiko and Joshua Tomaic, put up eight each.
“I’m happy, which is hard to say sometimes as a coach,” Dutcher said.
Next, San Diego State hits the road to play New Mexico, but in Texas, due to pandemic-related restrictions on the Lobos’ home turf. The game starts at 8 p.m. Wednesday and airs on FS1.
