The Aztecs played in the 2015 NCAA Tournament to conclude that season, falling to perennial power Duke, and missing a shot at the the Sweet 16.

Matt Mitchell led the team with 18 points against LIU, followed by Jordan Schakel with 15. Malachi Flynn and Yanni Wetzell added 13 apiece. In addition, Flynn had 10 assists.

SDSU plays Tennessee State at 7 p.m. Monday at Viejas Arena, then travels to Nevada for the Las Vegas Invitational. They’ll face Creighton, which has made it to the NCAA Tournament two of the last three seasons, on Thanksgiving Day.

Wetzell, a senior, had a big week, first in the Tritons 66-49 win against the University of San Diego Wednesday.

He set career highs with 20 points and 12 rebounds, his first double-double at SDSU and his third in Division I. He had two last year at Vanderbilt.

Coach Brian Dutcher credited Wetzell for his “great poise and patience and strength.” The transfer said it was nice to “find my rhythm overall.”

The Aztecs avenged last year’s 12-point home loss to the Toreros (2-4). USD dropped to 19-32 in the series.

In addition, San Diego State impressed USD coach Sam Scholl.

“They’re going to have a very special year,” he said. “They’re well-coached. They compete defensively. They get on the glass. They have phenomenal guards.”
