San Diego State sophomore Leo Oyo captured his first-round match at the 2019 U.S. Amateur Golf Championship this week, defeating fellow Aztec teammate Puwit Anupansuebsai.

They played on course No. 2 at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in North Carolina.

A day after his Wednesday victory, Oyo, from Tokyo, fell to Parker Coody of Plano, Texas.

John Augenstein, of Vanderbilt, and Andy Ogletree, of Georgia Tech, face off Sunday for the championship.

In Wednesday’s clash, Anupansuebsai, from Thailand, was seemingly in control. However, after the two players bogeyed the par-4 12th, Oyo caught fire, winning five straight holes.

On Tuesday, Oyo finished medal competition in a six-way tie for second place. The group fell one shot behind recent Stanford graduate Brandon Wu.

Oyo was one of only 11 golfers to finish medal play at or below par.

SDSU junior Anupansuebsai, meanwhile, advanced to match play after tying for 44th.

The Aztecs’ third qualifier, junior Zihao Jin, from Beijing, missed the cut for the top 64.
