A San Diego police vehicle struck and killed a University of San Diego student early Wednesday near the Linda Vista campus, authorities said.
An officer was driving westbound in the 5800 block of Linda Vista Road near Goshen Street at about 1:30 a.m. when the officer reportedly felt an impact to their vehicle.
The San Diego Police Department said that the officer turned the patrol car around and found a man in the roadway.
Officials said the officer, joined by backup officers, administered first aid until San Diego Fire-Rescue Department personnel arrived. The victim was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators said it was unclear why the man entered the roadway.
Police described the victim as a white man in his early 20s. His identity is being withheld pending family notification by police.
USD officials released a statement saying that “the university is fully cooperating with” investigators,” adding that it also would not release the student’s name.
“USD’s thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathies are with the student’s family, friends and classmates during this unimaginably difficult time,” officials said.
The identity of the officer involved in the fatal collision was not released.
The SDPD Traffic Unit and the Collision Investigations Bureau were investigating the crash.
