The San Diego Padres have signed veteran utility player Skip Schumaker to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training, the team announced Tuesday.

Schumaker, 36, has spent his 11-year career moving all around the diamond, and last season with the Cincinnati Reds, played second base and all three outfield positions.

He should provide the Padres with depth in the infield and outfield and also provide the team a left-handed bat off the bench on a roster that is loaded with right-handed hitters.

He had a .242/.306/.336 batting line in 131 games with the Reds last season, who did not pick up his option after the year concluded.

The veteran has spent a bulk of his career with the St. Louis Cardinals (2005-12) and also a year with the Los Angeles Dodgers (2013) before playing with the Reds the last two seasons.
