One of the San Diego Padres’ biggest needs coming into this offseason was addressing the shortstop position, and now they may be looking at Ian Desmond as a possible solution, according to Fox Sports.

The report indicates that the team has had ‘ongoing discussions’ with the long-time Washington Nationals infielder, but no deal is imminent at the moment.

Desmond, 30, has spent all seven seasons of his career with Washington and was selected as an All-Star in 2012. He also received the Silver Slugger for National League shortstops in 2013 and 2014.

Last season the Padres did not get a lot of offensive production out of the shortstop position with the Alexi Amarista and Clint Barmes platoon.

Jedd Gyorko batted .277 and hit 8 homers in 29 games at shortstop at the end of the season, but he was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals for Jon Jay earlier in the offseason.

The team added a potential shortstop of the future in Javier Guerra, who was acquired from the Red Sox in the trade for Craig Kimbrel.
