San Diego Padres outfielder Justin Upton was named as a finalist for the Gold Glove Award for National League left fielders Thursday.
Joining Upton as finalists for left fielders are Pirates outfielder Starling Marte and Marlins outfielder Christian Yelich.
Upton was second on the team with nine outfield assists and had just three errors on the year, giving him a .988 fielding percentage.
While revered for his offense, Upton made a few spectacular catches throughout the year.
Arguably his most impressive one came July 7 in Pittsburgh, when he robbed Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen of a sure home run, leaping high over the left field wall to bring the ball back into play.
In his first season with the Padres, Upton was the team’s representative in the All-Star game and started 145 games in the outfield.
He is due to be a free agent this offseason and it’s unclear whether the Padres intend to sign him back. Upton will be one of the more coveted position player free agents.
