Former UCSD pitcher Guido Knudson had been having a fantastic 2015 season in the Detroit Tigers minor league system, and will now get a chance to pitch in the majors for the first time after his contract was selected by the Tigers on Wednesday.
He had a team-leading 10 saves for Triple-A Toledo so far this season with a 2.52 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 39 1/3 innings.
Along with playing for UCSD, Knudson is also an alum of Bonita Vista High.
“We’re really happy for and proud of Guido,” said UCSD head coach Eric Newman. “He’s a great representative of Triton Baseball.”
When Knudson—the Tigers’ 28th-round pick in the 2011 MLB First-Year-Player-Draft—takes the mound for the Tigers, it will be the first time a UCSD alum has played in the majors since Bob Natal on Sept. 26, 1997.
The 26-year-old Knudson is third in the UCSD program in wins (29) and fourth in strikeouts (253).
Ironically, Knudson played for Sweetwater Valley Little League, the team currently in the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa., who won today 14-2.
