San Diego State University announced Friday that it has established the Coryell Legacy, a fund that will support Aztecs athletics and endow scholarships.
Named after the late football coach Don Coryell, the fund has goals of 5,000 donors and a $20 million endowment. According to SDSU, the annual cost of student-athlete scholarships is $7.4 million.
The Coryell Legacy was launched with a $1.25 million gift from Robin and Bill Sinclair.
“Bill and I are not alumni, but we love the Aztecs,” Robin Sincleair said. “From the personable student-athletes to the hard-working coaches and staff, we feel SDSU athletics is a perfect match for our philanthropic priorities, and we are pleased to make this commitment in addition to our annual giving.”
Bill Sinclair said building an endowment will help guarantee the future of SDSU’s sports programs.
Coryell, who died four years ago, was the first head coach to win 100 games in both college and pro football, and is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.
