California Democratic Party delegates voted overwhelmingly Monday to endorse Dr. Akilah Weber in the upcoming special election for the 79th Assembly District.

Weber, a member of the La Mesa City Council and daughter of former Assemblymember Shirley Weber, received 97.5% of the party delegates’ vote.

“I’m humbled by the outpouring of support our campaign received tonight from grassroots Democratic Party leaders and activists who live in every corner of the 79th Assembly District,” said the younger Weber after the vote.

“In the state Assembly, I’ll fight for the progressive and inclusive values of our Democratic Party and work hard to deliver relief and results for San Diego County residents,” she added.

The seat opened when Gov. Gavin Newsom appointed the elder Weber as Secretary of State.

The primary will be April 6 followed by the special election on June 8.

The younger Weber is an obstetrician and gynecologist who founded and directs the Pediatric & Adolescent Gynecology Division at Rady Children’s Hospital. She also leads the adolescent gynecology program at UC San Diego Health.
