Freshman Rep. Mike Levin added his name Friday to a growing list of members of Congress who believe it is time to begin an impeachment inquiry into President Trump.
Levin, who represents the 49th District in north coastal San Diego and south Orange counties, announced his decision in a series of tweets beginning late in the morning.
“I have repeatedly said that I would support an impeachment inquiry when it became necessary to get the truth for my constituents. I now believe that time has come,” he said.
Levin announced his decision two days after special prosecutor Robert Mueller’s testimony before Congress, and a month after fellow Democratic Rep. Scott Peters came to the same conclusion.
Among the other members of the San Diego delegation in Congress, Rep. Juan Vargas has called for impeachment, but Reps. Susan Davis and Duncan Hunter have not.
Republicans control the Senate, and Levin acknowledged that “it may prove impossible to impeach the president regardless of what a House inquiry reveals.”
But, he said, “I cannot ignore the dysfunction, corruption, and abuse of democracy that we witness every day from President Trump. We have the serious crimes revealed in the Mueller Report including multiple cases of obstruction of justice.”
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Friday that a decision on whether to begin an impeachment inquiry would be made “in a timely fashion.”
