A Marine veteran who challenged Rep. Scott Peters, D– San Diego, for reelection last year was appointed Tuesday to the city of San Diego’s Civil Service Commission.
The City Council confirmed the appointment of Jacquelyn Atkinson on a 7- 2 vote, with David Alvarez and Georgette Gomez opposed.
She’ll replace Kathryn Ashworth on the commission, which oversees civil service rules for the city and appoints the city’s personnel director.
The CEO and founder of defense contractor Crux Management came in third in the June 2016 primary election, garnering 13 percent of the vote, for the 52nd Congressional District.
She finished about 3,000 votes behind another Republican, Denise Gitsham, who eventually lost in the general election in the district that covers central and northern sections of San Diego County.
Mayor Kevin Faulconer, who made the appointment, said Atkinson served in the U.S. Office of Personnel Management for three years while in the Marine Corps.
Councilman Scott Sherman said Atkinson “served our country with distinction.”
Alvarez and Gomez, both Democrats, didn’t comment on their dissenting votes.
