Rep. Darrell Issa on Wednesday praised the appointment of a special counsel to oversee the federal investigation into Russia’s possible interference with the 2016 presidential elections.

Robert Mueller, a former FBI director, was appointed by the Justice Department to investigate the allegations that Russia interfered with the elections to help Donald Trump win the Oval Office.

“It’s time to get to the bottom of this,” said Issa, who endorsed Trump. “I’ve been pressing the DOJ to take this step for nearly 3 months because the Americans deserve nothing less than the truth. I have faith that Robert Mueller will provide the independence necessary to be sure this investigation is conducted with the trust and confidence of the American people.”

Issa, who was also endorsed by Trump, said he was one of the first House Republicans to call for an independent investigator.
