A groundbreaking ceremony was held Friday for the initial phase of a major renovation project at Mira Mesa Community Park.
“This first phase kicks off a project that will bring a brand-new swimming pool, skate park, ballfields and more for Mira Mesa children and families,” Mayor Kevin Faulconer said.
The first phase also includes new multi-purpose ballfields, a new walking trail, picnic tables, shade canopies, benches, bicycle racks, and a concessions building with restrooms. Construction is expected to begin next week, according to the mayor’s office.
The project, scheduled for completion in 2017, will also include expansion of park grounds onto the former Carroll Elementary School site, located across from the existing park.
Councilman Chris Cate, who represents Mira Mesa, said the project “is the culmination of two decades of hard work and dedication” by members of the Mira Mesa Recreation Council.
The work will also include an off-street parking lot, lighting, landscaping, and utility and water quality upgrades on Westmore Road.
Future phases will include construction of an aquatics center and swimming pools, a skate park, a new recreation center and playground renovations.
