Democrats took all statewide posts Tuesday and Tom Torlakson was re-elected as superintendent of public instruction.

In the top positions, Governor Jerry Brown cruised to a fourth term and Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom easily beat challenger Ron Nehring 55.2 persent to 44.8 percent. Brown’s Republican opponent, Neel Kashkari, conceded around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The race for Superintendent of Public Instruction, which was initially hotly contested, ended with incumbent Tom Torlakson beating challenger and fellow Democrat Marshall Tuck by nearly 6 points at 52.9 percent to 47.1 percent.

In another close race, Democratic candidate for State Controller, Betty Yee, built a 52.2 to 47.82 lead over Republican opponent Ashley Swearengin.
