Times of San Diego continued its rapid growth in readership in July, recording 233,873 unique users, nearly double the number in June.
The startup news website began the month with a very popular article listing July 4 fireworks displays throughout San Diego County. That article was viewed over 60,000 times. Even so, the site was being read at a 250,000-user rate by the end of the month.
Readers continued to be young, local and mobile, according to data from Google Analytics:
- Readers under 35 accounted for more than a third of reading sessions, and 70 percent of traffic went to readers under 55 years of age. This is in contrast to traditional media, which has a significantly older news audience.
- The City of San Diego accounted for 37 percent of readership, followed by 19 percent elsewhere in San Diego County, and 12 percent elsewhere in Southern California. The balance is national and even international.
- Some 39 percent of traffic came from smartphones, and 14 percent from tablets. The share on smartphones increased 9 percentage points from June.
Times of San Diego’s mission is to provide essential local news, especially for busy, younger readers, and the site uses the latest responsive design to automatically re-size for devices with different screens.
