Good morning, San Diego.

First things first: Caltrans needs funding for new safety barriers around the Coronado Bridge. Seems like everyone I know who grew up here has some sort of awful story about something they witnessed, or worse yet, experienced firsthand.

But you know what? I don’t think I’m going to get into it first thing in the morning, so I’m just going to say our top story’s an important one and leave it at that.

We also take a look at Katherine Spies, a San Diegan tapped to live the dream – she’s one of NASA’s ten newest astronauts.  The six women and four men in her class will undergo two years of training before becoming eligible for spaceflight.

I’ve always been surprised that more people who grow up here don’t develop an all-consuming interest in the stars. The crystalline air of San Diego and our dark skies (in some areas) make for wonderful stargazing and astrophotography, if you’re into that sort of thing, and we even have an official, certified Dark Skies Community: Borrego Springs. To me, it just makes sense that we would produce a dedicated crop of astronauts.

But then again, I misspent my youth mostly up in the hills of East County, and I was the sort of child who would get up early to observe the waxing and waning cycles of Venus, that sort of thing, so naturally I grew up to become… a journalist.

But back to the news. We also had a scary school lockdown situation in Clairemont yesterday that luckily turned out to be due to unfounded threats, moves to eliminate community parking, clearing clouds, and much more.

But I got a late start, so instead of getting into anything else, I’m signing off now to mainline another cup of coffee. Maybe two.

Opinion: Will California still be golden at its bicentennial in 2050?

The challenge for Californians in 2050 will be one of imagination: to see themselves as inheritors of a compromised-but-still-resourceful California.
