A car fatally struck a pedestrian early Monday on Interstate 5 in the far northern reaches of San Diego County.
The southbound Ford Mustang hit the man south of Basilone Road in the Camp Pendleton area shortly before 12:30 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
The victim, whose identity was not immediately available, died at the scene.
“Currently, officers do not suspect alcohol or drugs as factors for the driver,” CHP public-affairs Officer Jared Grieshaber said Monday afternoon. “Investigators have not determined whether alcohol or drugs played a role for the pedestrian.”
Multiple lanes were shut down for several hours on I-5 from the border of San Clemente to the edge of San Diego County, though by 7 a.m. at least two of the lanes had reopened, officials said.
