Misclassifying police misconduct records – Lawsuit says San Diego police are sidestepping review of potential misconduct
When is police misconduct not police misconduct?
When it’s been reclassified as something minor in order to sidestep oversight, of course. That’s what one social advocacy group is claiming is happening in an overwhelming majority of such cases in order to keep citizen complaints from reaching the independent oversight body created to monitor law enforcement in 2020. “This case is about more than any single complaint. It is about preserving a system of civilian oversight that community members fought for over decades,” said attorney Geneviéve Jones-Wright, who filed the complaint along with Pillars of the Community.
The petition argues the practice is a violation of Measure B, which nearly three-quarters of San Diego voters passed in 2020. Read our top story from Dorian Hargrove and Andrew Keatts for details.
