Longtime San Diego business and nonprofit leader Lorin Stewart has begun a new role as CEO of USO San Diego.

“I’m looking forward to leading this fine organization to reach its goals and vision of helping to strengthen America’s military service members by keeping them connected to family, home and country,” Stewart said.

The USO serves as a home away from home for U.S. armed forces members and their families. Chartered by Congress, USO San Diego receives no federal or state funding, but relies instead on contributions and volunteers.

Stewart, who was previously acting CEO of LEAD San Diego, was the founding executive director of the San Diego Tourism Marketing District and director of operations for Old Town Trolley Tours. Earlier in his career he was an actor in movies, TV and stage, notably with the Royal Shakespeare Company in London.

The USO operates the Neil Ash Airport Center at San Diego International Airport as well as a facility downtown. Last year the organization counted 260,000 instances of service and support.

“Our mission is to uplift active-duty, reserve and guard personnel, as well as their families in all circumstances, from transitioning to deployment, to the wounded, injured and fallen,” said Stewart.
