Two Marine Corps pilots escaped serious injury Wednesday when their jet fighters collided in the air during training maneuvers off the coast of San Diego.
The single-seat F/A-18 Hornets struck each other over the ocean about 11:45 a.m., according to public affairs officials at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, where the aircraft are stationed as part of the Third Marine Aircraft Wing.
One of the pilots was able to remain airborne and made a safe landing at Naval Air Station North Island. The other safely ejected.
Personnel from the USS Carl Vinson rescued the second flier shortly after 12:30 p.m., officials said.
Both pilots were taken to medical facilities, where they were admitted in stable condition for observation.
The cause of the collision was under investigation.
