Ships, sailors, airmen and Marines of the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group are scheduled Friday to deploy from San Diego.

The amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island, amphibious transport dock ship USS Somerset and amphibious dock landing ship USS Comstock will head out to the western Pacific and Middle East, according to the Navy.

Aboard the ships will be nearly 1,900 sailors, 2,600 Camp Pendleton-based members of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, the “Blackjacks” of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 21 and detachments from Assault Craft Unit 5.

The Makin Island ARG will take part in maritime security operation and be available in the event of a crisis situation.

The mission will be commanded by Navy Capt. Michael Crary and Marine Col. Clay Tipton.
