Two people were killed late Monday afternoon when a small Cessna plane crashed at Montgomery Field, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
The fatal crash was reported at 5:20 p.m., and the Federal Aviation Administration temporarily closed the airport.
Aviation sources said the plane was a Cessna Skyhawk 172, a popular single-engine, 4-seat private aircraft.
Crews extinguished a small fire on the runway caused by the crash, and also contained a fuel spill, Fire-Rescue spokesperson Candice Hadley told City News Service.
”This is a terrible situation, and our hearts go out to the families of the individuals who were in this plane,” Hadley said.
It was unclear if there were any other injuries or structural damage.
The National Transportation Safety Board was investigating the crash.
