American and coalition warplanes continued to strike Islamic State forces on Presidents Day with a total of 15 strikes reported over the 24-hour period ending 8 a.m. local time Monday in the region.

The strikes against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, referred to as ISIL or ISIS, came under Operation Inherent Resolve.

American forces include the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson. The San Diego-based supercarrier has a crew of 6,000 and carries 90 aircraft.

The action comes a day after ISIL-affiliated terrorists beheaded 21 Egyptian Christians in nearby Libya. Egypt responded with airstrikes on ISIL positions.

Airstrikes in Syria

Fighter, bomber and remotely piloted aircraft conducted two airstrikes in Syria:

  • Near Kobani, an airstrike struck an ISIL large tactical unit.
  • Near Dayr az Zawr, an airstrike struck and destroyed multiple ISIL oil pumps.

Airstrikes in Iraq

Attack, fighter and remotely piloted aircraft conducted 13 airstrikes in Iraq:

  • Near Al Asad, an airstrike struck an ISIL tactical unit and destroyed an ISIL vehicle.
  • Near Al Qaim, an airstrike destroyed an ISIL excavator.
  • Near Bayji, two airstrikes struck an ISIL tactical unit and destroyed an ISIL checkpoint.
  • Near Fallujah, two airstrikes destroyed an ISIL vehicle and an ISIL mortar positon.
  • Near Haditha, an airstrike struck an ISIL tactical unit and destroyed three ISIL vehicles and an ISIL building.
  • Near Mosul, four airstrikes struck an ISIL tactical unit and destroyed two ISIL fighting positions, an ISIL excavator and an ISIL vehicle.
  • Near Rawah, an airstrike destroyed an ISIL armored vehicle.
  • Near Tal Afar, an airstrike struck an ISIL tactical unit and destroyed an ISIL building.
