The San Diego Humane Society will provide free microchips through July 3 and waive reclaim fees through July 8 to help pets return home after the fireworks of July 4th, the organization announced Tuesday.

“Due to pets being spooked by fireworks, the organization is urging pet owners to take steps to protect their pets from becoming lost, as shelters are already full,” a statement said.

The San Diego Humane Society is offering these incentives and urging pet owners to take steps to protect their pets from becoming lost, because the July 4th holiday typically leads to a sharp increase in the number of stray animals entering shelter care — and shelters are already at capacity.

Lost pets can be reclaimed between 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. SDHS hours will be extended to 10 a.m.-7 p.m. on Saturday, July 5.

To reduce the risk of pets getting lost, San Diego Humane Society recommends taking the following steps:

  • Make sure your pet is microchipped, and the information connected to the chip is up to date.
  • Make sure your pets wear a collar with an ID tag, even if your pet stays primarily indoors. If tags are unavailable, write your phone number on your pet’s collar with a sharpie.
  • Keep dogs leashed on outings at all times, especially in the days leading up to and on July 4. Make sure collars, harnesses and leashes fit properly and are secure.
  • If fireworks scare your pets, now is the time to schedule an appointment with your vet to discuss medication to reduce their stress.
  • If you plan to be out during the celebrations, make plans for a pet sitter. Having someone present can provide companionship for your pet and help them stay calm, minimizing the risk of them becoming lost.
  • Prepare a safe space within your home where your pet can seek shelter during the festivities. Keep your pet comfortable and protected from external noise and lights.
  • Make sure your home’s doors, window and yard are secure, and don’t leave your pet outside unattended.
