The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office hosted a gun buy-back event in Chula Vista today, offering community members a chance to safely dispose of unwanted firearms.
The event took place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the South Bay Courthouse in the 500 block of Third Avenue.
A total of 112 firearms were turned in by the public during the event, according to the sheriff’s office.
Residents were encouraged to turn in handguns, rifles and shotguns in exchange for $100 gift cards, while those who surrendered assault weapons received $200 gift cards.
All weapons will be processed, and any firearms that were involved in a crime will be referred to law enforcement. If stolen, original owners will be contacted.
Personnel from the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, Coronado Police Department, National City Police Department and San Diego Police Department helped support the event.
