A cold storm brought rain and snow to San Diego County on Friday, with schools closing in the mountains amid icy roads.

“A cold trough of low pressure will bring scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms west of the mountains today,” the National Weather Service said. “Snow will fall in the mountains as low as 3000 feet.”

The CHP reported snow on Interstate 8 west of Pine Valley, and schools were closed in the Julian Union Elementary, Julian Union High and Spencer Valley districts.

High temperatures on Friday will only reach 56 along the coast, 54 in the western valleys, 44 to 49 near the foothills, 37 to 46 in the mountains and 58 to 63 in the deserts.

Rain totals Friday will range from 0.1 to 0.75 inches west of the  mountains, while the mountains could get 2 to 4 inches of snow between 4,000 and 5,000 feet, and up to 12 inches at higher levels.

At the beaches, surf is expected to build through the day on Friday to reach 7 to 8 feet due to a 13-second swell from 280 to 285 degrees.

Dry, cool weather is forecast for Saturday through Monday, with warmer weather returning on Tuesday.
