The city has asked University City residents, business owners and other stakeholders for their opinions through an online survey intended to guide the development and growth of the area.

Officials opened the survey this month as part of the University Community Plan Update. It will eventually replace the community plan approved in 1987 and set a blueprint for the area for decades to come.

Elements to consider as part of the plan include promoting growth by adding density through infill development, balancing jobs and housing and meeting climate action goals.

The plan also will include consideration of trolley lines, bus and bike lanes, different housing options and support for existing industry and job sectors.

The community extends roughly east of La Jolla, north of Clairemont Mesa and west of Mira Mesa and Torrey Hills.

The interactive survey features questions regarding desired land-use options in five focus areas, all with the goal of supporting mixed uses such as housing and businesses.

Community members can explore details, imagery and impact outcomes for each option and provide their recommendations and preferred options. Videos also give more information on each focus area.

Public input is crucial, said city planning director Mike Hansen.

“We’re excited to give the public a chance to truly visualize what the future of the University Community Planning Area could look like and to give us their input on that vision,” he said.

The survey closes Oct. 31, and results will be shared at a future Community Plan Update Subcommittee meeting. Along with several in-person outreach events, two virtual open houses are planned – on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Work on the update began in 2018. It is expected to go before the City Council in 2023.
