A warning sign for contaminated beach water via San Diego County.

An existing water closure at the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge and Imperial Beach shorelines has now been extended to include the Silver Strand, the County of San Diego Department of Environmental Health announced Sunday.

Sewage-contaminated runoff in the Tijuana River has been entering the Tijuana Estuary as a result of recent rainfall. Officials warn that ocean water contamination now extends from the U.S.-Mexico international border north to Silver Strand.

“Signs warning of sewage contaminated water will remain in place until field measurements indicate the ocean water is safe for recreational use,” the agency said.
