Two north and southbound lanes of Interstate 5 near UC San Diego will be closed from 9 p.m. Monday until 5 a.m. Tuesday as crews begin preparing for construction of the Gilman Drive Bridge, authorities said.

Mid-Coast Transit Constructors, a contractor for the San Diego Association of Governments, will be working north of La Jolla Village Drive and south of Voigt Drive.

The bridge will connect Gilman Drive to Medical Center Drive, linking the east campus and west campus of UC San Diego.

Barricades will be in place through 2018, SANDAG said. This preliminary work may also include removal of vegetation in the area, SANDAG said.

“Once complete, the bridge will improve traffic circulation and access for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists, as well as UC San Diego students, personnel and medical staff,” said Helen Gao of SANDAG. “The project budget is $20 million. The bridge is expected to open in the summer of 2018.”

The neighboring I-5/Genesee Avenue Interchange project, which is ongoing, will have concurrent work and closures on I-5 at Genesee Avenue, from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Thursday. One direction of the freeway will be closed at a time to allow construction crews to install temporary wood forms that will be used to build the foundation of the new I-5/Genesee Avenue Bridge.
