The San Diego Zoo announced Wednesday that it will hold a 100th birthday celebration on Sunday.
The event will feature an opening parade, activities for children, entertainment, extra animal encounters and a special show at the Wegeforth Bowl for guests and members. The show will conclude with a rededication of the zoo to the children of the world.
The zoo was founded on Oct. 2, 1916, by Harry Wegeforth, his brother and three colleagues. They got the idea from animal exhibits at the Panama- California Exposition in Balboa Park a year earlier.
The zoo plans to offer extra activities to connect children with wildlife and nature on Saturdays and Sundays throughout October.
Next month is the annual kids-free month, in which children 11 and younger will be admitted free to the zoo and Safari Park when accompanied by an adult. Many other attractions around San Diego will also have special kids-free offers.
