Memorial arrangements were pending Thursday for the ex-wife of retired NBC News correspondent George Lewis, who was killed when her car crashed off Interstate 5 in the Oceanside area and plunged into the Santa Margarita River.
Jane Cook Lewis, 74, of Bay Park, drowned when her southbound 2004 Chrysler Pacifica veered off the freeway for unknown reasons and sank in about six feet of water shortly before 4 p.m. Monday, according to the California Highway Patrol and county Medical Examiner’s Office.
Her ex-husband paid tribute to his former spouse on his Facebook page.
“Jane was many things in life: friend to practically everyone who met her; the young wife who encouraged her husband, George, to pursue his TV career; ‘Janie the Weathergirl’ to the viewers of American Forces TV in Saigon during the Vietnam War; mother to Sarah and Katie; and grandmother to Carter, Jack and Owen, a role she especially cherished,” the longtime newsman posted.
A celebration of life for the Hoover High School and San Diego State University graduate is in the planning stages, according to the retired newscaster, who suggested donations to favorite charities in lieu of flowers.
