A problem with weight distribution in a truck Thursday caused a one-day delay in the delivery of 19 tons of puppy food to the Rancho Coastal Humane Society, which plans to distribute the bulk of it to area animal rescue organizations.
The donation of Nature’s Recipe puppy food was made by the nonprofit GreaterGood, which focuses on the care and feeding of rescued animals, along with human concerns like hunger and breast cancer.
The delivery was scheduled Thursday, but is now scheduled to take place on Friday.
RCHS President Jim Silveira called it “the largest pet food donation in the 56-year history of your Rancho Coastal Humane Society.”
“This donation should provide more than 100,000 meals for puppies in San Diego and surrounding counties,” he said.
Silveira said the Humane Society received a previous donation from GreaterGood in December and passed it out to groups in San Diego, Imperial and Riverside counties.
“When the 48 pallets of puppy food arrive we’ll take a few bags to restock the Community Pet Food Bank here at Rancho Coastal Humane Society, but 99 percent of the food will be distributed to our rescue partners,” Silveira said. “The money that our rescue partners save from their food budgets can be used to provide more spay/neuter, veterinary, and care services.”
About 200 rescue groups exist in the region. Their members will start picking up the food this afternoon, and the distribution process should take two or three days, he said.
