This weekend is Mother’s Day. If you still don’t know where to take mom on her special day, check out our Mother’s Day brunch guide here.
For the rest of us, here are the top events for this weekend.
Gator by the Bay
Nowhere else can you get authentic Cajun cuisine this side of the bayou. The 14th annual Gator By The Bay is the largest, most authentic Louisiana-themed music and food festival on the West Coast.
The event features four days of live music with more than 85 musical acts on six stages, Southern food and the highlight of the festival — 10,000 pounds of crawfish fresh from Louisiana.
Gator by the Bay goes from 3:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Friday, 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, and 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at Spanish Landing. Tickets range from $25 to $95.
67th Annual Ocean Beach Kite Festival
This festival is fun to bring the kids to. The rules are simple: make your kite and fly it. That’s it. You can even bring your own kite.
The Ocean Beach Kite Festival also has Kite Ballet, as well as other feats of skill events. And this being San Diego, there is a beer garden as well as street vendors to peruse through.
The event is free and goes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
Asian Cultural Festival
May is Asian Pacific Islander American Heritage Month. Celebrate by attending the sixth annual Asian Cultural Festival.
The festival features two stages of cultural and contemporary entertainment all day long, a live cooking demo, arts and crafts, martial arts demos, a Cultural Row and children’s rides.
The Asian Cultural Festival is free and goes from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Mira Mesa Community Park.
Bacon & Barrels
Everything tastes better with bacon. That’s the idea behind Bacon & Barrels.
This outdoor festival is a must for bacon-obsessed foodies. All day long, participating chefs will challenge each other to create the most imaginative dishes incorporating bacon.
For the ‘barrels’ part of the event, there will be some of the best artisan and craft barrel beverages, such as bourbon, beer, wine and scotch for you to enjoy.
The event goes from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Embarcadero Marina Park South. Tickets range from $20 to $90.
Garden Party of the Century
Balboa Park turns 100 this year. This Saturday, celebrate 100 years of horticultural history of the part at the Garden Party of the Century.
The free day-long event features plants and programs that make Balboa Park the gem of San Diego.
In addition, the San Diego Museum of Art is also free for the day.
