A broken pipe in Hillcrest Sunday sent a 20-foot stream of water into the air and into the already rain-slicked street.

The ruptured line in the vicinity of Fifth and Pennsylvania avenues was reported around 1:30 p.m., San Diego police Officer Dan Lasher said. The impromptu fountain was shut down about 20 minutes later, he said.

It was not immediately known if any homes or businesses in the area were without running water.
