Crews had to rescue a man at Mission Bay Resort on Wednesday morning when he trapped himself beneath his own truck after driving it down the sidewalk.
According to reports, the man was illegally driving down the public sidewalk at the water’s edge at a high rate of speed for unknown reasons on Wednesday morning when he crashed into the walkway in front of the resort at the board dock at around 6:51 a.m.
His truck flipped over as a result of the crash. The driver was subsequently partially ejected and trapped under the wreckage on the sand.
Passersby tried to help until first responders arrived on the scene a few minutes later.
Crews initially had issues locating the man.
“It was very tough access to get down to where the vehicle was located,” San Diego Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief Jeff Phillips told Onscene.Media. “The victim was pinned.”
He thanked passersby for helping the trapped man until crews arrived.
First responders, which included lifeguards and police as well as Fire-Rescue crews, were able to dig him out from under the truck with shovels and take him to a nearby hospital with unknown injuries.
The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department said a total of 24 personnel had been assigned to the scene, including a truck, three admins, two engines, two medics, one rescue crew, and a battalion chief.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
