The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department has publicly identified an inmate who died last week after suffering a medical emergency at San Diego Central Jail.
Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report that 42-year-old Richard Woodford had collapsed at the Front Street detention center and found found him unconscious and unresponsive on the floor of a shower room at about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Despite lifesaving attempts by medical staffers and paramedics, Woodford died prior to being transported to a hospital, said the department.
“At this time, the cause and manner of death has not been determined by the (county) Medical Examiner’s Office,” sheriff’s Lt. Michael Krugh said Tuesday.
Woodford, who was unhoused, had been arrested June 25 in Santee on a misdemeanor warrant charging him with intent to defraud, and possession of a controlled substance and illicit drug paraphernalia.
