A driver who fatally struck a pedestrian as she was crossing an Otay Mesa road, then fled the scene, was sentenced this week to 11 years in state prison.

Estevan Fabian Corona, 49, was convicted of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence for hitting 21-year-old Brescia Ayon with a vehicle on March 5, 2020, then leaving the scene.

San Diego police said Ayon was within a marked crosswalk at the intersection of Otay Mesa Road and Otay Mesa Center when she was struck at around 9:15 a.m. The driver who struck her ran a red light, then drove off.

Ayon died at the scene.

Corona was arrested more than two years later at the San Ysidro Port of Entry.

A GoFundMe page created around the time of her death states Ayon was a former cheerleader for the Club Tijuana Xolos soccer team and was studying child development at Southwestern College with aims of becoming a preschool teacher. Ayon was walking to work when she was killed, the page reads.
