A 50-year-old man in the San Diego County Jail has been arrested in connection with a decade-old shooting death in the Jamacha-Lomita area, San Diego Police said Wednesday.

Sonny Estrada, who was already in jail on an unrelated charge, was identified by detectives as a suspect in the shooting death of Daniel Coriz, 42, according to Lt. Jud Campbell.

On May 11, 2014, at about midnight, San Diego police officers were dispatched to a report of gunshots in the area of 1100 Koe Street, the lieutenant said. Officers found Coriz outside a residence suffering from a single gunshot wound to his upper torso.

Paramedics responded to the scene, but the man died of his injuries.

The investigation at the time found that two assailants had approached Coriz and one fired several rounds. The suspects were both described as wearing black bandannas, black-hooded sweatshirts and black pants.

Since 2014, San Diego Police detectives have continued to investigate the case.

Campbell said that as the investigation progressed, detectives identified Estrada as a suspect in the shooting. Estrada was arrested on Friday and booked on suspicion of one count of murder.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting was asked to call the SDPD Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or San Diego County Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
