A 36-year-old inmate has been arrested in connection with the death of his cellmate, 24-year-old Brandon Andrew Yates, earlier this month, authorities said Tuesday.

Sheriff’s officials said investigators have arrested Alvin McDonald Ruis based on probable cause in connection with Yate’s death.

Homicide investigators were notified around 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 16 about an inmate at the San Diego Central Jail found unresponsive in his cell. He was pronounced dead about 45 minutes later, according to a release from San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.

“We extend our sympathies to the Yates family and those affected by this death. A sheriff’s liaison officer will support the family as they deal with the loss of a loved one,” officials said in a statement.

Ruis was initially arrested at his residence in Chula Vista by the Chula Vista Police Department on Dec. 27 on suspicion of domestic violence, willful cruelty to a child, stalking, burglary, violation of a court order, committing a felony while out on bail and violation of a domestic violence temporary restraining order.

Sheriff’s homicide investigators conducted a thorough investigation as required by protocol, and the case has been sent to the District Attorney’s Office for filing of charges.

The county medical examiner’s office will determine the exact cause of Yates’ death.
