A man accused of killing his girlfriend’s toddler son in Bay Terraces pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges of murder and assault on a child causing death.
McArvin Caringal-Sanchez, 20, is accused of fatally injuring the unidentified boy, who was nearly 2 years old at the time of his death on Monday.
Police responded that afternoon to a home on Morton Way to check on reports of a child who was not breathing. The boy was taken to a hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
According to San Diego police Lt. Jud Campbell, the child was found to have “serious traumatic internal injuries that were indicative of child abuse.”
The investigation led to Caringal-Sanchez’s arrest. Police and prosecutors have not disclosed further details regarding the allegations against the defendant.
He remains in custody without bail following Thursday’s arraignment.
