A man was killed Friday, and his passenger was badly hurt, when their truck crashed on a desert highway in the far reaches of East County.
The driver lost control of the Chevrolet pickup about 3:30 p.m. on Highway S2, about seven miles south of state Route 78 in Shelter Valley, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The northbound truck overturned, coming to rest on its roof, Cal Fire Capt. Thomas Shoots said. Passersby stopped and came to the aid of the driver and his female passenger, both described as elderly.
The man died at the scene. Paramedics airlifted the woman to an Imperial County hospital for treatment of moderate to severe injuries, Shoots said.
The cause of the crash was under investigation.
